AN: Called "The Difference Between Love and Music (Is That Music Is Always There)"
but I couldn't fit it all in!

---

“Jane.” I looked around. I was putting my books in my locker before first period. They was a crowd all around the lockers and in the hall, everyone telling people what they did over the weekend, but I recognized the voice. It was the voice of my best friend Ashley.

“Jane!” She yelled again. "Excuse me!” She said to a boy standing in her way. He looked at her and smiled.

“Hey Ashley. How was your weekend?” He asked smugly.

“In your dreams, David.” She walked around him and started towards me. Ashley looks like a model. She super tall, almost five-ten, and has a figure most girls would starve themselves for, expect for that she doesn’t. She can eat whatever she likes without gaining a pound, unlike me who gains a pound just looking at a cake. Not saying I’m fat or ugly, but where ever we go, Ashley is the own who makes heads turn. I would hate her if she wasn’t my best friend.

“Jane, finally.” She arrive at my locker. Today, she was wearing a halter-top, blue jeans, and cowboy boots. It’s much different from my long tie-dye tee and black skinny jeans. “I need to talk to you!”

“Yeah, Ashley. What is it?” I ask her.

“Greg has quit the band. Again.” I groaned. My guitarist, Greg, quits my band, Sonic Overdrive, every few months. “He says it’s for good this time.”

“I’m so tired of him. I would have kicked him out a long time ago. But, he’s so good at the guitar! Guess we have to fine another guitarist as good.”

My life revolves around music. I play 4 different instruments, I write songs, and I’m in indie band where I sing. It’s no wonder because my mother, Angie, was a musician in the sixties and seventies. She and her band never got big, but now she is a bestselling author. The band I’m in consists the drummer Steve, the bass player Erik, the guitarist Greg and me, the vocalist and songwriter. Well, at least it use to consist of Greg. Soon we’d be having auditions for new member. Ashley is not in the band, but she loves it. She does everything she can to help out. I don’t know if it’s because she thinks Steve, the drummer, is cute or because she really enjoys it, but all I know that Steve has had a crush on Ashley every since he joined the band.

I put the rest of the things I didn’t need for class and Ashley and I started down the hall to  English. We walked into the classroom right as the bell rang.
“Thank you for joining us,” Mr. Johnson, my English teacher, said as we sat down in our seats. “Now, does everyone remember what we were discussing last Friday?” I blanked out the rest of the lesson. Fortunately, Mr. Johnson didn’t call on me to answer any questions. The whole period I thought about the auditions for the new guitarists. I started making a list of qualities we needed in the new guitarist:

-Can play guitar (duh!)
-Can practice at least 2 times per week
-Not a “drama queen” who will quit the band every few months

Ashley, who was sitting next to me, saw me writing and took the paper from me. She started reading it. After she finished, she started scribbling on it. She smiled and then gave the paper back to me. I looked down to see what she wrote. Under my three qualities, Ashley wrote:

-Must be Cute!!

I looked at Ashley and laughed. She started laughing with me. Mr. Johnson turned his head from where he was writing on the blackboard. He glared at Ashley and I. That just made us laugh even more. Thankfully, the bell rang right then. We darted out of our seats and made our way to the door, giggling the whole way.
